Earthsteps: A Rock's Journey Through Time
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (August, 2000)
Authors: Diane Nelson Spickert and Marianne D. Wallace
Average review score:

Children are fascinated by this book!
I enthusiastically recommend this book! Who knew that the journey of a rock through time was dramatic AND fascinating? When was the last time you considered how a simple rock came to be? This story is as educational as it is entertaining to the children who have read it in my home. I had a five-year-old guest for the weekend, and THIS is the book she wanted out of all the books in my library. She was drawn to this rock and cared what happened to it. It was fun for her to "find" the rock in every beautiful illustration. Every time I read it to the younger children, I learn a little more, too!

Earthsteps - a great book for budding scientists
Earthsteps - A Rocks Journey Through Time, is beautifully done. My grandchildren loved reading it and they have taken a new interest in rocks. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to bring the beauty of science to their children.

Earthsteps: A Rock's Journey Through Time
Historically accurate! We could find lots of books about dinosaurs, but very little about geology for children. What we liked about this book is that it is scientifically sound, yet not too complicated for children.

Rammstein
Published in Hardcover by Die Gestalten Verlag (November, 2001)
Authors: Gert, Rammstein, and editor Rammstein
Average review score:

The very best book about this band! (It's the *only* one...)
Boy, did I ever love reading through this truly excellent compilation of common promotional and rare personal photographs in this well-worth-the-50 Deutschmarks book about the greatest German rock group of the modern, or any age, in my opinion. But hey, no offense to the Scorpions, or even Kraftwerk, it's just that Rammstein is definetly my favorite. Being of German heritage, I greatly appreciate the material included. There are many great-looking photos, ranging from on the set of their videos, to live in concert, to them on Holiday in Greece and Mexico. But that's not all. From each member of the group (except for Oliver the bassist, for some odd reason) there are personal recollections. What detail, and what exiting lives these guys have led! They speak about meeting, recording, performing live, and sometimes their personal lives as well (i.e. wives and children). And I love it! Back to being part-German, yes, that's just where I was to buy this item, last December, in Heillbronn. Right in the middle of the Weinachsfest und Markt (Christmas festival and market), boy, was that ever a fun time! Anyway, I really enjoy this book. Herzeleid, Sehnsucht, and Mutter are masterpieces of rock music, and man, these guys put on a hell of an action-packed show! But only from what I've read and seen in this book and on the Live Aus Berlin DVD, unfortunatly, I've never actually attended a live show. But that doesn't mean I still can't! I hope to do so one day, yes, indeed! Bottom line here, get this book! The Six Teutonic Titans of Metal will be in your gratitude. Auf Wiedersehen, jetzt, meine Damen und Herren!!!!

Rammstein the book. Who says reading is boring now?
Im not much a reader, exept for the master mind of horror,
Stephen King and his brilliantly written work. When my book finally came in, I was so filled with joy that I went in my room and started reading the wonderful book which Rammstein graced the cover of. There was wonderful pictures and they six german master-minds of teutonic shock-rock are quit interesting to read about. I must admit, no other band has ever brought me the thrill of being a obssesive fan like Rammstein has. Those 160 pages filled with the deranged Berlin natives are the best 160 pages I read since the hilarious, Gertrude Besserwisser's "Sheisse!". If your a Rammstein fan like me, get Rammsteins book because as long as you have to wait for it to arrive, you'll be ten times as happier to get the honor to hold it in your hands and read it over and over and over . . .
Plus you get to see pics. of the wonderfull mad-men, Till,Christpoh,Flake,Oliver,Paul and not to forget the wonderful,
Richard Kruspe. These guys are great. Yeah, I know that my review makes me look like a Rammstein lovin' ..., but I urge you to buy it as soon as you can, like RIGHT NOW!!!!!

But thats besides the point.

RAMMSTEIN- the best book in existence!
When i got this book... ooh, was i excited! this is extremely wonderful and gave me a better insight to how RAMMSTEIN works. Schneider's writing in this is a bit silly and has no real subject (what an awesome guy), but at least it's better than Olli.. who wrote nothing at ALL! LOL. Richard and Paul's descriptions are very interesting about the early days (petrol floor.. haha), and Till and Flake... well, they're just themselves...with sexy results! The pictures are great. i was gazing at one of them in south america so long that i noticed- Paul and i wear the same boots! Such sexy results have we! GET THIS BOOK, YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!...

Dancing the Dream: Poems and Reflections
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (July, 1992)
Author: Michael Jackson
Average review score:

A MUST-READ! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is truly a wonderful book. For those of you who think Michael Jackson is crazy, or others who may think his only talents lie in singing and dancing, you gotta read this book! It's basically a collection of poems and stories written by Michael, and each one has a moral (No, it's not a kiddie book). I used to think he had no talent for writing before I read it, but after I read some of the reflections, I felt like I had experienced and learned more than I ever had from a single book. For those Christians, there's a good number of poems and reflections about God in there, too! My favorite poems in there are "So the Elephants March," "I You We," "Berlin 1989," and "But the Heart Said No."

Great Poems
The poems in this book are wonderful to read and the pictures in this book are great. I really like the poems a lot and I like to read them in my room. Michael Jackson did a great job with his poems in this book and I hope he continues to write poetry in the future.

In A Word: Breathtaking.
This is Michael Jackson at his prime. It is a living proof that the man is not only the greatest pop star that ever lived, he's the greatest artist that ever lived.

The book is printed 100% on glossy paper and has tons of pictures. It contains Jackson's observation on life, humanity, god, the world and children. It takes you places only Michael Jackson can.

So, in a word? Breathtaking. Get it right now!!!

Beatles Forever
Published in Hardcover by Fine Communications (July, 1997)
Author: Nicholas Schaffner
Average review score:

The Personal Touches are the Best
Hands-down, the best parts of this book are the personal touches. Nick's original reactions to Beatles films, his memories of being burned on bootlegs by soundalike groups in 1964, etc., are things you really don't get in any other book. It's a Beatle book written from the perspective of a Beatle FAN and it shows. Those are my favourite parts, and those are the parts I still enjoy reading. OTOH, sorry to say, a lot of Nick's fact-checking, while state-of-the-art for the mid1970s has been rendered inaccurate by Lewisohn's wonderful, more recent work. Still, every author deserves to be judged by his best moments, and because Nick's love for his subject matter shines through his accesible writing style, I recommend this book to anyone who can track down a used copy.

25 YEARS LATER...STILL THE BEST BOOK ABOUT THE BEATLES!!!
I read THE BEATLES FOREVER when it first came out. Nick Schaffner managed to tell the history of The Beatles and combine that with the memoirs of a fan growing up in the United States. And the combination of those two elements were an unqualified success, as evident by the thousands who have read and admired the book over the last 25 years. It influenced me to write AS I WRITE THIS LETTER: AN AMERICAN GENERATION REMEMBERS THE BEATLES. In fact, I wrote to Nick in 1980 to tell him about my idea. He wrote back and was very encouraging, giving me reason and validation to continue in my endeavor. I had the opportunity to meet Nick Schaffner at a Beatles Convention, the first one held after the assassination of John Lennon. He was a true gentleman, who took the time to talk to me despite the collective grief of the convention attendees. To put it simply, THE BEATLES FOREVER as stood the test of time. It's still wonderful and can never be duplicated. We all wish that Nick was still here to bask in the adulation this book deserves. Somehow...I think he knows. Haven't read it yet? What are you waiting for?Marc A. Catone

Still the "mother of all Beatles histories."
The late Nicholas Schaffner may have turned more people onto the Beatles, their music, and their place in the 1960s than any other author. That so much of this book remains complete and accurate is a tribute to the author's research; that it remains perhaps the most entertaining history of the group is a tribute to his writing. In addition to tracing the group's history, beginning with the arrival of the Fab Four in America, Schaffner adds information about the chart performance of their records, songs performed on tour, and a wealth of period photos that document notable moments in their story. The book is also set apart from other, often repetitious (and pretentious) Beatles literature as the first volume to take a serious, detailed look at the solo work of John, Paul, George, and Ringo after the group's breakup. This detailed chronicle of the solo years was the first such look at that period for many fans familiar only with the group years. The number of Beatles books has proliferated beyond all reason, and yet only a few have improved upon, or added much of significance, to Schaffner's work. None has equaled his appeal and talent as a writer. Betty Mitchel

Tying Rocks to Clouds: Meetings and Conversations With Wise and Spiritual People
Published in Paperback by Image Books (April, 1996)
Author: William Elliott
Average review score:

Bringing Spirituality Down to Earth ...
The author, William Elliot is someone you might know, the boy living next door, who went away to the University, whose parents died when he was young, someone who was raised by loving parents, that is, until they died when he was a teen. He keeps alive the values and love his parents showed him but he is searching for something. He is looking for meaning - meaning to their death and his loss. He was a psychology major at the University of Wisconsin when he conceived of interviewing the "wise and spiritual" people who are alive today. His method was deceptively simple ... he sought answers to 25 - 30 questions that might unlock the secrets to his dilemma. Questions such as, "What is the meaning or purpose of life?" "Do you believe in G-d or Ulitmate Reality?" "Why is there suffering, evil in the world? and What is its cause?" "What is important to you?" "What are the three most important problems in life?" He was dissuaded from pursuing this endeavor, to write a book about his conversation with the "wise and spiritual" people whom he interviewed. He overcame challenges and obstacles to interview the people on his list, all the while holding firmly to his goal. He met and interviewed: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Ram Dass, Norman Vincent Peale, Robert Schuller, Jean Houston, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Rabbi Harold Kushner, psychologist Albert Ellis, psychologist B.F. Skinner, Pir Vilayat Khan, Frances Vaughn, Stephen Levine and even Mother Theresa. He interviewed a total of 21 high-profile persons deemed 'wise and spiritual' by modern standards. The author does not interpret the answers for us, instead he writes out the answers given to him by each person interviewed. In some cases, he writes an introduction prior to the interview, letting the reader know how he managed to get an appointment or interview with the "important" person or else he describes some interesting event or circumstance concerning the interview. He seldom makes a judgement about the person or what they said ... his writing style is matter-of-fact and straight forward. This style of writing makes the book a valuable and worthwile reading experience. It is as if, you, yourself, decided what questions to ask and took the time to write out the answers, sometimes, in utter amazement, that you snagged the interview with his or her eminence ... The author also made a trek to Nepal to meditate and visit one of the most spiritual climates and areas of the world. We learn of his experiences and interactions with people he met there. This book is recommended for anyone who has any interest in spirituality or has read any book by the persons whom the author interviewed. It can be said the author found the truth which he was seeking ... Erika B. (erikab93)

Extra Ordinarily Illuminating
William Elliot is a brave soul who had the naive courage to approach some of the greatest philosophers and spiritual leaders of our times to gain their perspective on the meaning of life. Remarkably, he gained access to a number of these prophets, who answered his questions in a thoughtful and decidedly heartfelt manner. There is much to provoke thought and inspire action in these pages. As drawn as I was to the book, eager to move from interview to interview, I found I needed to pace myself to better absorb what I was reading. Sometimes I felt my heart sing with the joy of hearing the expression of a kindred spirit. Other times, my desire to be compassionate and respect the beliefs of all felt challenged by the expressions of people with a greatly divergent perspective. Both experiences were of great benefit to me. The wonder of this book, outside the fact that it even came to be, is the engaging narrative Elliott weaves through the interviews. In his unabashedly honest, touching, and humorous, style, Elliott wryly observes that the path to "knowing" can be a twisted and never ending journey of delightful surprises. Travel along with him, you won't be disappointed.

Tying Rocks to Clouds : Meetings and Conversations With Wise
William Elliott's writing style is easily read. The story of years and years of travels focuses on those interviewed and telling their story in such a way as to bring many interviews into a perspective for the reader's appreciation of what Elliott's life has been about -- all a well-woven fabric. His objective stays well-centered. That gave me a real sense in reading this most interesting book about various religous leaders and her/his successful living out their dedication. Elliott has indicated his next one is on experiences of 40 days in the desert in looking at how Jesus did his forty days there two centuries ago. I am excitedly looking for it to show on the market.

The Who: Maximum R & B
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (October, 1982)
Author: Richard Barnes
Average review score:

Even the most rabid fan will learn something new!
As a 15-year Who fan, I've often lamented that the end of the creative Who coincided with my interest in the band. I wondered why there weren't at least more albums from their peak creative years. After reading this book, I now understand all the complex group dynamics that both fueled and hindered the band. From this book, we see it all from an eyewitness unencumbered by celebrity. As introspective as Townshend often was (is), he often contradicted historical recollections of the legendary Who. Richard Barnes seems to set the story straight, and despite being a close friend of the band, tells it honestly. Warts on the arse and all. A great read broken up by scores of previously unseen photos and memorabilia.

World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band!
Simply put, The Who transcended rock in their heyday. A much more compelling live act than the Stones or Beatles...lyrically soaring over Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. A chronicle of the greatest band to emerge from the British Invasion. The Who's magic, was that it was a machine...but an ever-changing one. Pete Townshend's lyrical courage, Roger Daltrey's agressive vocals, John Entwistle's thundering bass and Keith Moon's anarchic drumming made this a band for the ages. This book, a must for any Who completist, is also a wonderful source for the new fan. With it's use of exclusive photos and insider tales, the books author (Barnes) has managed to please even the most informed fanatic. Towsnhend, Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon are captured in their true form...as flawed individuals and as peerless performers. Anyone who has been a fans for years will love the "behind-the-scenes" peeks...and the new fans will delight in these stories as an introduction to the greates band in rock and roll. Loud, raucous, destructive, brilliant. Pick it up if you love the Who!

Who's Better, Who's Best
This is the inside scoop on The Who from a friend of Pete Townshend's before The Who even existed. There are an overwhelming number of color and black-and-white photos and a text that takes you on The Who's amazing journey from guitar-smashing hooligans in Shepherd's Bush dives to rock 'n' roll gods. If you like rock music at all, you need this book

The House Without a Christmas Tree

The House Without A Christmas Tree
I read this book to my classes when I taught 4th grade in Nebraska. It was touching and heartwarming, we especially liked the school Christmas party. The characters were so well developed. Everyone related to Addie and her lonely life. I remember it being on TV with Jason Robards as the father. How can we get it back on TV?

Excellent!
This is such a heartwarming story. Addie is a wonderful role model for young girls -- She is so intelligent, independent, and strong-willed. I've always loved reading the beginning of the "Addie Mills" books, when she tells the reader, "I'm an artist now, and I live and work in the city..." I think it's very inspiring for a child to see that this character -- an awkward little girl -- pursued her dreams and became a successful artist.

My father gave me this book when I was ten years old, and then bought me the others in the "Addie" series. I am now 25 years old, and I still read them from time to time. They've been read so many times they are literally falling apart. Each time I enter a used book store, I search for the titles...It's such a shame they are out of print.

A very heartwarming story. now, and 20 yrs. ago
I read this book at 11 in 1975, and still get out my copy each Christmas to relive the touching Christmas of Addie. I love this book as much now as I did 20 yrs. ago. Would Love to know why the series of "Addie" stories are no longer in print.

Jaco: The Extraordinary and the Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius, "the World's Greatest Bass Player"
Published in Hardcover by Backbeat Books (May, 1995)
Author: Bill Milkowski
Average review score:

Jaco will always be "The Greatest"!
I picked up this book out of curiousity after buying Jaco's solo album. I heard of him and I wanted to read about him. This book has changed my views on the music industry and performing and has ultimately made me a better musician. Jaco single handedly revolutionaized the electric bass to unimaginable proportions. No bass player should ever go without a Jaco album and no musician should go without reading this book. Informative, tragic and educational. I love this book and have have read it through four times. Jaco and his music will live in my heart forever.

If you thought you knew about Jaco tragic life, you MUST read
I thought I pretty much had an idea about Jaco's tragic life, but after reading this book I learned so much more.I do not read alot of books but this book kept my interest from beginning to end.If you play the bass you must read this book so you can understand how much you owe Jaco,if you do not play bass[which I do not]but have a love for music and are interested in look at rare individual you must read this book.Jaco like so many b4 him[Jimi,Janis,Brain Jones etc]had that special flare and magic and just tried to live to much oof life,in Jaco's case a mental disorder as well as drugs did not help.So from 1 lover of music [I play drums] to all who are in that catergory, please read this book.

Jaco was my hero
I couldn't believe it when I finally found a book about Jaco. Where have I been? I was thinking of writing my master's thesis about Jaco a couple of years ago. But how could I top this book. What a great read. I read it in 2 days. I couldn't put it down. Of course when you love someone's music, and are amazed and saddened by someone's life like Jaco's, it's not hard completely diving into the book and not coming up for air. I wish someone would option this book for a movie. It's a great, yet tragic tale.

Hey, Hey, We're the Monkees
Published in Hardcover by General Pub Group (October, 1996)
Author: Harold Bronson
Average review score:

Not complete
I just got this book recently, and I was pretty disappointed with it. Although it's not The Monkees fault, almost every passage in this book has been quoted on one website or another, making almost everything in the book lose it's freshness. Also, the Monkees don't talk about the group's long breaking-up period (from when Peter left in spring, 1969, to when Micky and Davy finally called it quits in 1970) or their lives individually after they broke up and very briefly about their lives before they were picked for the show. Still, the few parts that weren't quoted on websites before are interesting (like the Micky-making-fun-of-Don Kirshner story), and it's charming to read their recollections, particulary Micky's and Peter's. In short, this is a good book, but it's missing some stuff, and don't be surprised if you've read pratically everything in it before.

EXCELLENT
This is an AMAZING book! It is a MUST for every Monkees fan! The book is full of wonderful pictures and stories, most of which you won't find elsewhere. IT. IS. GOOD.

best monkees book yet
the pictures in this book are great, and show a lot of what the monkees were all about. lots of candids. but the best thing about this book is not the pics, but the stories told by micky, davy, mike, & peter. first hand info from the men who lived in the monkees phenomenon. a must read for a good laugh or a good sigh.

U2 Live!: A Concert Documentary
Published in Paperback by Omnibus (December, 1995)
Authors: Chris Charlesworth, Primm Jal De La Parra, Pimm Jal De La Parra, Pimm J. De La Parra, and Pimm Jal De La Parra
Average review score:

The best U2 book
This is far away the best U2 book, have all the information, concerts, tv shows, pictures, old concert poster and tickets. If you are looking for a specific date in U2 days, you find it on this book. buy it!

Essential U2-fan Concert Guide
If only we all were so lucky to have the time to so completely research and gather U2 concert stories and memorbillia! This book is so fantastic - it's almost as good as being there, and it keeps interest of even non-U2 fanatics. Can't wait for an updated version to include the Popmart tour (hint, hint)- I have a few stories to add to that one.

Indispensable
This book is an absolute must for fans of U2 and ESPECIALLY for collectors of U2 bootlegs. It's like a bible that charts the correct dates for every show U2 has ever played (up until the 1998 publication.)

The correct set lists and supporting acts are also mentioned for the vast majority of the shows. Also, most shows have descriptions of highlights, lowlights, etc. Want to find out more about the show you're about to buy a bootleg for? Get out this book!

This book was updated shortly after PopMart ended, but unfortunately it seemed very very rushed and therefore there is little to no information about any PopMart shows save for the debut. (Only dates are given.) Nevertheless, it is definite that this book will continue to be updated, hopefully soon with a complete PopMart coverage and then with the whole Elevation tour.

This book must sit on every U2 fans shelf. Highly recommended!
